Buffer image.
I do not agree with Facebook, Twitter and others banning “offensive conduct.” It is bad to stifle expression and ideas, and it is impossible to regulate on line behavior in any meaningful way. In my view, some ugliness is the price to pay for free expression. Someone just sent me a link to this:
You can’t tell me Alex Jones is worse than this. Admittedly, I don’t look at his content, by my impression of him has been that he is a loudmouth clown. How is this ok with Twitter and YouTube? It seems to me that this give some credibility to to the idea that politics plays a role in these bans. If you never heard him while he was alive, I will leave “hate speech” to the great Patrice O’Neal.
“Why can’t I hate you...in speech?”
Ok, I can’t leave you without leaving you with a bit more Patrice.

I’m glad you said it, and I’m with you 100%.
Had I done the same I’d have a dozen people in here yelling at me and telling m e I’m wrong for reasons.

Banning a person from voicing their beliefs, especially beliefs that are contemptible, indirectly benefits them, as it isolates them from critique. It is not the job of a social media company to regulate ideas- it is only their job to provide a forum where such ideas can be discussed and critiqued.
(my personal $0.02)

RIP Patrice.
I think it would be better to judge Alex Jones on his own merit rather than comparing him to Louis Farrakhan. It’s too easy to fall into saying “but what about X?” And there is always someone else to compare them to.
It’s true that words are not actions, but what about words that inspire actions in others? Alex Jones is currently involved in a defamation lawsuit from the families of some o f the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. The claim is that Alex Jones’ repeated claims that the shooting was a conspiracy have caused these people to be endlessly harassed by listeners of the show. One family claims that they’ve had to move 7 times and can no longer visit their son’s grave.
Nobody has a constitutional right to a twitter account.

That’s a great distinction, general shittiness vs inspiring action. The past few years show a dangerous path along those lines. One can argue Jones is a far more dangerous character than Farrakhan, who has always been seen as a shitheel and I’ll wager a lot has a much smaller following than Jones and his legion of magats.

As far as I’m concerned, any private platform for speech, be it social media, blogs and what have you can decide what they find acceptable content and create rules accordingly. I do agree however that consistent enforcement is crucial and pretty much non-existent right now.
I’m also convinced that the world would be a lot better off without Twitter.

I can get away with hate speech because I hate everyone everywhere equally.

Also, its not about enforcement, but the appearance of enforcement. They really don’t give a shit as long as they get the clicks and aren't publicly humiliated. If the news picked up on this farrakhan guy he'd get banned lickity split.

Let peoplle self identify. Nazis used to feel comfortable at punk rock and hardcore shows until members of the community banded together and made it an extremely unsafe place for them. No need for the government to step in. I like that approach.

He’s been around a long time, he’s not some unknown guy posting things from his basement. Pretty much where the “Katrina was a government plot to kill black people” conspiracy came from.

It was a stupid idea as it’s just going to make him seem that he knows “What’s really going on” and the illuminati is trying to silence him, or whatever.
At least to his followers.

Guess he doesn't get the spotlight because he doesn't fit the racist white guy narrative
